![]() ![]() Turkey is at the core of many current intellectual and political debates. Besides, some in-depth interviews were held with the representatives of a few non-state actors in order to map out the way they see the promotion activities. In order to reveal the state sponsored activities, a discursive analysis of the speeches of various statesmen like the President, Prime minister, Foreign Affairs Minister and the Culture and Tourism Minister. The second part will focus on the state and non-state sponsored promotion activities of Turkey in the European Union countries. The first part will end up summarizing the activities of the European Union Delegation in Ankara with a special focus on the public activities underlining European norms and values. In doing so, the paper will first revolve around the construction of the modern Turkish citizenship with an historical perspective, and then it will discuss transformation of higher education in Turkey with respect to the ways in which Turkishness and Europeanness have been reflected by the higher education machinery. The first part will focus on state and the actors that are active in the process of identity formation with a particular emphasis on higher education and the European Union Mission in Ankara. ![]() ![]() Kemal Alemdaroğlu Rector of Istanbul University Under the guidance of these thoughts, I would like to state that the founding date of Istanbul University will be celebrated with magnificent ceremonies in every 50 years. We may have some inadequacies in this effort but we believe that these will be tolerated. The Opening Activities’ being published as a book is very significant in that it is an entry made in history. When our esteemed leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk had the Istanbul Darülfünun closed on Augand when Istanbul University was founded, the 550-year history of our university was once more emphasised through the inscription of the date, over the gate under the name Istanbul University, as MCDLIII. That our university started with its education in the vicinity of the Hagia-Sophia mosque on May 30 1453, the next day following the conquest of Istanbul by Mehmet the Conqueror, and that it continued providing education in the Zeyrek Pantokrator Monastry is a known fact. ![]()
